• Rescanning

From Bill Gordon@1:3634/22 to All on Mon Dec 3 13:27:57 2012
Is there any way to make IREX rescan constantly? I go through my message bases at odd hours and every time I post, I have to manually rescan to get the posts mailed to my hub. Otherwise, the hub only picks up and delivers on the hour. And when you are in a discussion with someone or seeking advice on an issue, that's a long time to wait.

    Thanks

understood... and i can't help with that other than to suggest that maybe there
is a rescan semaphore file that you might touch to tell IREX to scan for new outbound mail...

but then i also know that you are a downlink of mine and if this is concerning fidonet message traffic, i feel that i should point out that you can send to my
system any time you like... at least the mail is off your system and you can feel better that it is on its way... however, my system will sit on that mail with all the rest it receives and process it on schedule instead of as soon as it arrives... i had to do this for some other downlinks who have very iffy connections and who cannot always pull the dozens of PKTs or bundles that await... it was the best of both worlds to go to a set schedule for mail processing... especially since it is all too easy to process more than 36 times
a day which then results in bundles of the same name as already created and possibly delivered...

so the best time to deliver mail is any time before the scheduled processing but picking up mail is best polled for after that processing has taken place...

    for more/updated details, netmail is just a click away ;) ;) ;)

Not constantly, but you can do scans in an event, every minute to every 24hours, your choice.

An example below shows the time your event starts, when you're most likley
to be at the computer and doesn't end.

    Tag DAYS START NEXT COMMAND
    S ALL 08:00 00:02 -sq

TAG can be any letter/number you choose to use, not case sensitive.
DAYS can be a choice betweeen ALL days or those days of your choice.
START is the time of day to START this event.
NEXT is the repeat-interval between COMMAND events.

    COMMANDS (as in; -x)

    -S EQUALS 'SCAN'
    -F EQUALS 'FETCH'
    -Q EQUALS 'QUEUE'

i.e. -SQ means to scan the queue...if you want to 'fetch' mail from your downlink, you enter an -fsq with that node's net number following...

    i.e. -sqf 1:387/22

In the EVENT MANAGER, there are certain things you can choose to do, like
make the event ENABLED or DISABLED, what days to run this event, etc...you
get there by hitting the 'enter' key on an empty line and you also get
there by scrolling to an existing event and use the 'enter' key again to
    edit that event.

Polling a downlink 24 times a day is already asking a lot! Anyone
expecting help instantly, should pay for consulting services. Or if
they can't afford to, work on developing patience. It is a virtue.

hehe... well, those who poll my system without delivering anything are wasting time since there is no mail processed except at specific times of the day... if
they are delivering mail, that's another thing altogether and not a problem at all...

not really... not in this day and time of fully connected 24x7 internet... my main feed drops off mail here sometimes several times in 5 minutes... his system is set to deliver as soon as it is ready... 1 message or 100... it doesn't matter...

there used to be a system that polled here looking for mail (nothing being delivered at all) every 5 or 10 minutes... i noticed that because my logs seems
rather large and a quick perusal showed what was happening... so i let them know and now, with even more connections and mail flowing, the logs are smaller
    in size ;)

I BELIEVE I have got it so it ONLY polls you when there is an outgoing message, or as scheduled (at the top of the hour).

If it polls more, let me know, and I will try to adjust.

Isn't it great? I'm halfway through my coffee break/new messages scan, and replied to a message. I got a reply to my reply before I was done reading that message area!

Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled topic. :)
