From Alan Ianson@1:153/757.2 to All on Wed Feb 3 17:04:00 2021
    Hello All,

A friend running windows needs an ftp client to up/download QWK packets and replies to the BBS.

Does anyone have recommendations for an easy to install and use ftp client
    for windows?

I wonder if windows still has the CLI ftp client and if that would work?

Filezilla seems to be the defacto standard.

Just tried it on my Windows 10 20H2 install and it's still there.

That would probably be the simplest, although not graphical.

The CMD ftp.exe is still there in Win10.

As others already mentioned WinSCP and FileZilla, I would like to add that some advanced file managers like e.g. DirectoryOpus also include FTP
    clients.
Here, it should also be possible to create scripts for automation :)

That's good. I use something like that on linux most times when I need to access an ftp site.

That does sound nice for scripting. Thanks for the hint.

I've been using FileZilla for as long as I can remember. I use
it for many different places. Only your site has a problem when
the PASV step is reached. :(

My FTP site runs on my own computer behind my router and that is all I have.

It is my hope that it will work for anyone who would like to browse or download anything from there but it doesn't always work.

There are two things I can think of that might help.

    1) I could put the BBS on a VPS somewhere.
    2) I may get a new, better behaved router.

It is likely that one of those will happen at some point but not in the foreseeable future.

What is your 1st choice dream router? Maybe I could help pitch
in for your 3rd choice! Hehehehheh.

At least 4 different people have sent me hardware and software
packages over the years at no cost. I'd be happy to pitch in if
that could help you get the hardware that would work.

I just returned the Netgear Orbi (RBK752) that caused my IPv6 issues. That was a bummer because I did so much research and it "seemed" perfect.

I'm now eyeing up the Eero Pro 6 (2 Pack), but still need to do more research (and wait for a sale).

What is your 1st choice dream router? Maybe I could help pitch
in for your 3rd choice! Hehehehheh.

At one time I had a collection of routers. If one didn't work I'd use another.

At one time I had a little black box, it was about the size of a jello package. It was cheap and worked very well, I ran the BBS off that box very well for a long time.

The box I have now was provided by my ISP and does everything. It's a modem and router along with WiFi all in one. Any regular internet consumer would be perfectly happy with the way it works. The problem comes up with the ports. There is some kind of server answering on port 22 and 23. I can disable it but then port 22 and 23 do nothing. Port 21 is also a problem for some.

A VPS would solve all these port issues, I think. A well behaved router also but for the time being that is what I have.

At least 4 different people have sent me hardware and software
packages over the years at no cost. I'd be happy to pitch in if
that could help you get the hardware that would work.

I am not sure if I can plug another box in here with what my ISP provides so I don't know if that would help at all. In fact, I don't know the difference between these different boxes.

Thanks. I was having a similar problem years ago with a different computer and router. I'll have a fresh look at that and see if I can get it working better.
