    Hi,

I have just connected to this echo. Is there any other traffic other than solar
    reports?

Yes, though it's hardly chatty. Some discussion of typical ham topics
can be found from time to time.

Mmm..., will stay connected and see, maybe I will get off my butt and get myself a ticket, 5 words a minute morse, should not be too difficult to achieve, and if I brush up my electronics knowledge a little I just might pass the operators ticket (lisence), nearly did a few years ago, but got side tracked by computers.

Besides the Solar report, your own Richard Peer does a SA Radio
    weekly
and Paul Williams does an AMSAT report. The only way you'll get something
else going is to pick a subject and either ask questions or start a conversation about something. There aren't many HAMs left in
    Fidonet, and
with more Amateur Radio echoes than HAMs, the topics sometimes gets spread
    pretty thin.

Mmm..., okay, will hang around and see what happens. :-)

    Thanks.

Nope. Should be able to get that down in a short time. I don't know if
the ARRL has web-based code practice, but there are many programs. W1AW
code practice would probably be quite difficult to receive consistently
    in ZA-land.

I don't know the testing regimen, but 5wpm shouldn't be hard. Entry
level theory testing also shouldn't be hard, probably a fair amount
of rote memorizing of band limits and the like.

Code practice as in recieved over the air is not a possibility as I currently don't have any equipment. But I do have thee audio tape cassettes for morse code practice, which I have not had time to use recently as I am busy rebuilding my system after WINNT and a Linux gotha I missed trashed all my HDD partions, a sorry state of affairs, but as they say in the classics, shit happens. :-((

I believe that one has to send at 5wpm for three minutes and recieve a message correctly sent a 5wpm over a 5 minute interval.

Over the years I have aquired enough manuals for the learning part, now just need to get an updated version of the new Laws of the Land regulating Ham Radio
in ZA land. These have changed since I last looked into getting a HAM Radio Lisence.

Ouch! Problem I found with the tapes is that you eventually memorize
them. I have a great old Heathkit morse keyboard with a random practice
mode. I'd bet there are many programs, even DOS, for code practice. I
wrote one years ago for the old TI-99/4A. The machine was so slow it
    couldn't send over about 13wpm..

5wpm is almost lobotomy speed. Should be able to do that pretty
    quickly.

Must be something on the web, somewhere. Does your local radio society
    have a web site?

Just need to learn the code, and get the hand muscles syncronised.

Yeah, noticed they sell the legal booklet quite cheap, will order it.
