    aside. Lowering requirements to accomodate those who cannot otherwise obtain licenses, diplomas or other certificates of achievment will nearly always degrade the standard which they represent and has always been an area of concern for me. I feel that standards should always be raised or maintained;

Now explain to me how getting rid of CW on a global scale, is lowering standards. It is no longer required, then the standard is gone. You did mena that it made a great filter, to keep the riff raff out, didnt ya?

Well since they have DUMBED down the Writen test so a Trained Monkey can pass it I am NOT afraid the say "YES, CW Should be retained as a Filter" We already, with the Dumbed Down test, have filled the ranks with what I call the
    CB mentality.
It might be different in other parts of the World but here in Southern California USA the VUH/UHF bands are a Zoo of Clowns.

On the contrary, the written tests have be expanded and require more
technical knowlege since the lowering of the Morse testing. Morse never
did keep the riff-raff out as much as the technical aspects of those
tests. It may have been a deterent to ward off the lazy, but anyone who
wanted to be a HAM never let a mere 5wpm stop them.

We already, with the Dumbed Down test, have filled the ranks

Your opinion of 'dumbed down' and 'CB mentality' vary from my opinion of
them. We have all kinds of people who are in the hobby and even though
they may have come from the ranks of CB, they're not necessarily of that mentality. I've known people in that community who're way above a lot of
    HAMs in their technical abilities.

It might be different in other parts of the World but here in
Southern California USA the VUH/UHF bands are a Zoo of Clowns.

You've just described the entire population of California.

REmbember I think the Last Meaningfull Ham Test was given in the 40's

The present Test is a TOTAL JOKE compaired to the one I took in 1947.

I'm afraid that you are right. I took the Class "B" in 1946. At that
time one had to keep that license for one year before being eligeble
to take the Class "A" exam. I never did take it, though my dad did,
as if I remember correctly, the FCC dropped that class requirement to
work 75 and 20 fone. So why bother?, hi.
In 1985 I started missing out on the lower 25Khz of each CW band, but
had to take the Advanced and Extra class exams to get to the CW
portion. It "is" a memory test, and if one reads the questions and
correct answer enough times even the math problems are fixed in your
head. Although I took my calculator it was not needed. I could
    remember the answers.

    Best regards, (73)

I wouldn't consider memorizing the answers to the questions as mindless,
as there are more 'pool' questions than I'd care to memorize answers to.

    I couldn't say, as I didn't take a HAM test until 1970...

Well, back in 1947, real men didn't have to study for tests, they just
knew everything and proved it to themselves. Today, they're a little
smarter and study the sources given by the FCC/ARRL, to ensure that when
they do get license, they're not complete 'lids'.
