"but when a bass is slapped"
    Hi Alan,
I'd say changing the way the string and note are hit, or the percussive aspects
would vary the tone...true.. I feel that much of this

    Alan,
    Sorry, got "cut-off"
When you use the analogy of striking a string, or slap and pop, thin fingers...short fat pulpy finger; it's like describing the hammers, and felt hitting a piano string. Yes, the percussive aspects DO effect the tone, as do the strings, cabinet...surrounding area...etc. Rich did mention "mass of players bone", it all factors in. I'd concede to "Tone involves the fingers", I'd disagree with "Tone is in the fingers".

SEE MARTIN, before you disagree with me, understand, the word
TONE, isn't synonimous with technique :) I never said a good
    TONE = a good bassist.

    Right... neither was I...

I'm saying that TONE can result from a person setting an SVT/
Nice jazz bass together, and tweaking them so just playing the
open g string has a NICE TONE...

Okay, I think that's a given... a decent bass, good strings,
tweaking the amp, etc. Those things are understood. But there is
something beyond that in many guitar and bass players' sound which
I think has to do, in part at least, with the way they actually pluck
the strings and/or finger the notes. It probably comes under the
heading of 'playing technique'. That's what I was talking about.

So Jaco playing a musicmaster bass, can produce a nicer BLEND,
then most with an Alembic, and a nicer guitar :) If we just define
tone as "sound in general", and not the quality of a particular
frequency interpretted by the human ear, then yes..I concede...
    It's all in the fingers...

Yes, it's a multi-faceted thing. I think that one aspect of it is
in the way the musician uses his fingers and hands. I saw a bassist
just last night who, although he played simply, had a very musical
style in the way that he played each note and the way his hands moved
around the instrument. I could hear that in his sound. As I said,
it's probably best described as 'playing technique', but it's not
necessarily related to musical knowledge, or what we generally regard
    as technical skills or proficiency.
    Does that make sense?

    Martin

That's all I was saying. I don't think Jaco meant that *all* of
his sound was in his hands. It was just his way of emphasizing that
the way he played was important to his sound.

    Hi Brett!

You know, I still have that tape you
sent me way back when, of you jamming to some jazz
    grooves.

Oh yeah... I have recorded that in 1994 in my kitchen :))) I have digitized the
original tape and have it on CD now. Have done the same with the echo tapes.

There is still an Echo CD project, but I haven't received much after the first people have sent me their contributions. I will not give up and maybe it will take another year,. But there will be an echo CD before this echo dies, and even if I have to play everything myself :))))))

    Take care

Well, I'm putting together a new home studio -- have everything in place,
    new multitrack, rack
mount delay, etc. Just need to get the amp some new tubes and I'll be
    ready to roll. So maybe
I'll get something done before the end of the year...

I hardly play anymore... I guess, I have reached a time in my life, when I don't really want to play... well... but I guess, the cause of that is a certain lady :)

Anyway, some contribution would be great. It has also been discussed to set up a website with MP3 files of the recordings. I could do that aswell, since I have a really great codec (Fraunhofer) and I already have all recordings digitized.

    Take care
