To me it does not matter how many systems use old connecting techniques.
If 2 systems want to exchange mail and files a certain way, why should that
be forbidden?, especially if they use old techniques Fido ever used a long time with many systems.
The only point is that at one of systems they should also have another current used way to exchange data to the rest of FidoNet.
The same happens when new techniques are tested and tried.
Dual connecting ways are necessarry to keep the data flowing through the whole FidoNet.

Years ago (1993) some one was building a point program called !WimpLink for RISC OS, and he especially asked me to remove EMSI for his system,
to find out if that connection way would work properly also.
Then he remarked that my FrontDoor 2.02 nc was not 100 % FTS001 compatible.
He had to change his routines to get it properly working with my FD 2.02 nc! Lateron he removed WAZOO or was it another old protocol from his source.
Of course today I am using EMSI, en are busy going over to !ROSBink at RISC OS (currently used) and Binkd for Raspbian Stretch Linux in the near future. Before the Telco stops POTS at september 2019,
I have to be ready with that move. It seems that will happen in time.
At the moment I am connectable both by POTS and IP.

Some other guy was talking about analogue modems via VoIP not working correctly, but I am sure it is now working much better than 10 years ago.
I even get good connects at 28k8 from VoIP systems, while I am still Pots.

No. But doing that, you most likely would bring the close attention of psychiatrists to your person.

If they use it for interchange, they are on their own. Once they want to participate in Fidonet, they should take some care of compatibility with protocols used by other members.

No: even G.711 does not give you full modem support - you'd need real E0.

I even get good connects at 28k8 from VoIP systems, while I am still
Pots.

Most likely they use older VoIP techniques based on E1 (30*E0 + 2 service channels) tunneling. Such hardware is very expensive to support, so most companies are getting rid of it.

Of course. But once such person would need to prove (s)he can drive a car or possess firearms, that could become a barrier.

No: it is broken by design and artificially weakened (supposedly, on request from one of "sponsors").

By the way, you really want an analogue POTS modem?
I have several of them for spare here.
Using one, you are contactable that way too at ZMH.
When combining that with a normally speech/voice line,
use a timeclock to switch it on and off at the desired hours.
