Yes, I have via voice that R13 is trying to vote but currently isolated. I am trying to reach Mike Luko via email as I do not have a voice number.

This is expected to be a long term outage at Bob Seaborn's. Not days, but longer, and no, he doesn't need a spare machine.

I don't know how many others may have lost all connection as of about midnight EST.

AFAIK, Bob's OS/2 system is/was running under vmware. It should be easy to restore from a snapshot.

You forget simpel good old 5,25" and 3,5" floppy diskettes.
I donot have USB on my 80486DX UniCorn BBS machine.

But instead of driving 2500 Miles,
the sysop can send the diskettes by airmail or landpost, sometimes seapost. Here in NL many years ago we had sometime a modemless point exchanging mail
by diskette for some months, because he studied in another city then where his parents lived. His boss had his BBSystem in the same study town.

Nowadays you could also use a drone as a transport method.
The only problem is the battery capacity for a given distance.
You could see that as a mechanical carrier pidgeon ;-).

    Greetings from Henri.

Sure. But, does your NC/RC/ZC have a floppy drive these days? It's quite doubtful.

But instead of driving 2500 Miles,

Still a better idea than the rest.

He probably got paid pretty good to do that, too (in those days).

Nowadays you could also use a drone as a transport method.

Only if it's within a km or mile or so. Otherwise, no way.

The only problem is the battery capacity for a given distance.
You could see that as a mechanical carrier pidgeon ;-).

I mean, if you want to see how far the battery can go, then set it up with a GPS so that you don't have to control it, put it on autopilot and see how far it goes. ;)

Yes, still remote controlled. The signal that fades away first is the visual. There are lots of videos on Youtube where people have flown it even further.

If he's most interested in taking selfies, DJI Spark is an
    excellent choice.

Hah! Selfies are definitely not of interest. Heck, we can even get him to pose for a nice picture (much like me). ;)

To be honest, I don't even think video capture would be much of interest. Just viewing real-time in good quality while flying, is all I would be interested in. If video capture came with, it would just be a bonus.

Sure. But, does your NC/RC/ZC have a floppy drive these days? It's

I have a 3.5" floppy-drive in a box, just in case somebody needs it,
and the motherboards can still handle it. The 5 1/4" floppy=drive was disposed of as I can't connect it anymore.

Hey, I've got 3 boxes with brand new 3.5" floppies left. Wanna have
    them?

Absolutely not. I have enough computer junk laying around that I've started taking it to the local electronics store for recycling. ;)

Believe it or not... I still have a 3.5"... (USB though... ) :)

I bet it makes a great paperweight! ;)

The only 3.5" stuff here I have is hard drives. 10+ TB worth, most in a raid configuration unless they're not going to contain anything important. All I seem to need these days. I have a couple plastic logs of CDRWs and DVDRWs that haven't been used in ages, and a USB adapter for microSD cards, usually only to
move things from old phones to my backup drives and/or to install an operating system in a VM (switching to VMWare Sphere Hypervisor has now made that redundant too, as I can just copy the .iso to the physical machine's datastore and install with a virtual drive).

Yes, but that was never used as a transportmedium for FidoNet messages.
28 years ago I got a CP/M machine with 8 Inch floppy drive and a 5 Meg HDD in it, never tried this aparatus. I think I'll bring it to a computer museum.
By the way, 8" did not have a capacity of 1.2 or 1.4 MB?
Case closed I think, as Michiel asked, or answer in netmail if you need to.

Sorry but 8" on some kit had double cap. of >2Mb and yes I did use them to pass
files as I had a Cromemco at work running *nix with twin 8" drives and a DASD containning a 80Mb fixed with a 16Mb removable as well as a slightly smaller one at home also running *nix but without any hard drives until 86 or so when installed some SCSI units.

Should also point out that I used a DAT drive on the home one and then only sent those out for file updates via the UK Filegate host as he did not run to dual fast pots systems (64kb x 2) but USR modems as most of us.
