4 years ago, I added the fsxnet.nz hostname to the default Synchronet/SBBSecho configuration with the comment "fsxNet now has a domain for DNS-based address look-ups". I haven't been using it myself, but it was in the default ctrl/sbbsecho.ini file. I tried a manual look-up today of my fsxNet address (21:1/183) using the hostname f183.n1.z21.fsxnet.nz, but it doesn't work. And other fsxNet addresses I tried don't work either. Did this ever work (and has since stopped working) or was I just misinformed?

Yep it did work in an earlier time but the fact that it's not at present is on me for not getting a script running reliably. I will circle back to this and aim to get it working as I would like it to. The trick for me will be making a combo of windows and linux stuff play nice to get the desired outcomes.

I'll work on this over the coming weeks and keep you posted Rob. Thanks for bringing this subject up :)

There is very few nodes listed in the DNS to begin with.
You's isn't, and neither is mine.. Paul was going to implement something,
but I think it got lost in the noise or the dog ate it! %-)

FWIW, this inspired me to look at adding DNS functionality to clrghouz - not sure how successful it would be. I spent some time yesterday writing a server and responding to requests - and now to put it all together (since I would have the mailer data in the DB already).

My thought is that I reply with CNAMEs to the mailer's address - perhaps with some svr records (not sure if any mailers use them) that would have the port details for said mailers.

For true redundancy, I'd probably should write the AFXR part as well, then a secondary DNS server (eg: bind) could support requests as well..
