• Hub 3 - No Internet

From deon@21:2/116 to All on Fri Mar 24 20:39:01 2023
    Hey Folks,

At 5:05pm today my Internet went down. A call to my ISP shows no problem on their side, so it has to be the infrastructure provider.

I doubt they'll send anybody around over the weekend, so it could be a couple of days that Hub 3 is not directly connectable.

I'll setup a poll to Hub 1 every hour, which if I receive mail, will trigger a poll to all nodes that are set to crash.

(I'm currently paired to my mobile 4G hotspot, but that is CGNAT, so no inbound options - but at least I can poll out.)

Hopefully it wont be too long...

Best of luck with getting your connection back. I ran realitycheckBBS
for a bunch of years on old laptops - it gave me battery backup, the
ability to hibernate/sleep when power ran out, and when I lost power for
a couple of days, I could take the laptop with me to a coffee shop and send/receive mail from the coffee shop.

Hauling a 4:3 laptop with a whiney fan and stickers that were intended
to remain in my storage space into a coffee shop full of people was an
    odd experience.

At least it was a good incentive for me to fix my dyndns setup and port forwards. Receiving mails again :).

I only have a public IP (non-CGNAT) on my limited 4G connection (throttled to 32 Kb/s, 1GB/month, 0€ prepaid plan), but it's more than sufficient for fidonet. The regular data plans of the provider are way too expensive and I use another provider for everything else. VDSL, landline ISP are still 3 Mbit/s max, so I prefer mobile connectivity, because I don't want to pay for a shitty connectivity (man, it's 2023). Fortunately you can get 4G/LTE with "unlimited" traffic (or at least 1TB/month) for 30€ a month. And it's fast (but CGNAT and I haven't figured out how to get IPv6 working).

I used to run a binkd server on my VPS, but I prefer the old-school way to run everything on your own hardware at home. Even if it is a bit more unreliable now and then.

Hopefully it wont be too long...

    any news?

Well, that explains the inbound mail lack I was investigating. :)

And why you probably won't see this until it gets fixed. Either way,
glad it's a known issue and that beyond technical issues, everything is
    ok.

    Hey....

I was just able to poll you! Welcome back! :)

    Awesome :)

BTW, I just checked, it seems I cant poll you on IPv6?

Looks like my IPv6 wasn't working for some reason. Just rebooted my router and it seems to be back up. I was able to poll you via IPv6 just now.
