• Question on an off-topic subject FM Radio, DAB+ or Manual HD Radio (IB

From alisha@21:1/220 to All on Mon May 10 18:01:41 2021
    Hello all,

What is the situation in your latitudes regarding FM, to what extent is HD radio based on IBOC an issue and what are your experiences with this type of reception?

Currently there is a big discussion in Switzerland, our government has
decided to switch off FM for commercial and non-commercial operation by the
end of January 2023. In other words, anyone who wants to listen to the radio
in the future will have to buy a DAB+-capable device or switch to other distribution channels (internet or DVB-C/S), depending on what the
    broadcaster offers.

Personally, I am not a fan of DAB/DAB+, I prefer FM and was able to enjoy HD Radio (IBOC) during 2 years in the field test, which convinced me of this technology as a further approach to the FM frequency band. Unfortunately this technology is dead in Switzerland. I hope other countries have made a better decision here than Switzerland, which in effect orders the customer to enrich the entertainment industry by having to buy a new receiver. In my eyes, this
is modern robbery of the taxpayer.

    Best regards

    Alisha

Here in my neck of the US, analog FM is still going strong. There are a
few stations nearby me with the digital sidebands common with HD radio
over here (we don't have a digital system that outright replaces FM
radio, rather the digital information is transmitted as two sidebands on either side of the analog carrier), though the number of digital
stations is rather low here. I still listen to mainly analog FM during
the day and analog AM for DXing at night.

I've been hearing about European FM switchoffs for a few years now, and
I'm sort of wondering what benefit, if any, it has. I've not really
heard their reasoning for it over here in the states, and I'd be curious
to know if you have the official reasoning for it.

No dab stateside (yet). I'm thinking we will have FM for some time to come. Still plenty of AM stations, as in certain areas FM doesn't carry far enough.

Some DMR I'm told, but I live too rurally to see it.

In our cars we are running SiriusXM, which is satellite subscription. Technically my sound system at home can stream the same service, but we
    almost never do so.

In Australia, FM is still going gangbusters. DAB+ is available in the capital cities. There were rumours about DAB here, but I have never managed to receive any DAB+ signals on the receiver I have here. Certainly no plans to drop FM here that I'm aware of. AM is still quite functional here too, given the vast distances.
