Allowed? That seems a bit harsh. In the age of Google Translate, maybe we
could be a little more diversified?

If I recall corrently, english is preferred as most of us speak that, but not strictly required. There was an FSX_ESP echo for spanish speaking but that seemed to go away when those who used it left.

I guess if there is a high demand for a particular language other than english Paul would spin off a new channel, but otherwise, other languages are allowed, those who can't read it can just skip over it.

Generally yes, but if there's not echo of the correct language, have a go anyways if there's enough to be annoying you'll probably get a new home :)

I've never really understood that. I mean, sure, it can be frustrating seeing a conversation going on that you don't fully understand, but how is that any different than English conversations when you have people around who English isn't their primary language? (Yes, my grammer is atrocious there)

Personally, I'm pretty much limited to English speaking or writing, but I can more or less follow along reading Spanish, French, and German. Or I used to be able to, I'm out of Practice.

Englñish is not my primary language, but I assume that when I go into some English speaking area, the responsibility of adapting to the situation is mine, not the local's.

It weirds me up when some Spanish speaker pops up at an English speaking IRC channel or forum and starts asking questions in Spanish. Seriously guys, with the exception of those who speak no English at all and whose question is "¿Hay algún canal para hispanoparlantes?" ("Any channel for Spanish speakers here?" ) it guives a very very bad impression.

Nod, I was pretty happy to have a crack at using some German, its the only other language I have any familiarity with and I don't get to practice often.

There was an echomail area set up for Spanish some time ago when we had an active node in the network. It didn't really come to much, he became inactive and I pulled the echo. I'm happy to spin it up again but equally fine with people posting messages in other languages here.

I agree that when you get a conversation going on that's not in English it
gets very hard to follow for those of us who don't speak another language. So that was partly the rationale last time to create the FSX_ESP echo, so that there was a focus for international banter in that language.

    Hi there.

Mostly English is spoken in this network but other languages are welcome.

In the past we created a place for Spanish to be posted and shared between
BBS in fsxNet. This echo area was called FSX_ESP Español General Chat.

It was created in June 2019 because LU9DCE was active in fsxNet. I am more
than happy to create this echo area again if this would help you and others from your country find a space to converse without the need to use Google Translate. I did post there from time to time using Google Translate to translate my words in to Spanish.

The message area was closed down in October 2019 as LU9DCE left fsxNet and there was really no activity / demand for a Spanish focused message area.

I do appreciate your efforts to translate your messages into English. It does aid understanding between people whose language is not native to each other.

What would be good though for this to work well would be to have others from your community active in the new message area. Else it will be inactive and idle. From my point of view I try to not have too many message areas that become places of inactivity. Better to have less message areas for this
    reason.

So yeah, let me know and if you would like it created again and I will do so and help you set it up on your BBS.

    Regards, Paul

    Hola.

    Saludos, Paul

Yeah, that was... rich. Literally someone telling us to stop doing something that was explicitly allowed, and had been discussed recently.

But, that said, I think most BBSers are good folk most of the time, and not ones to get too irritated by minor things like that.

Especially when it's possible that we could make life easier or more pleasant for someone who isn't a native English speaker.

Huh. And here I view it as an opportunity to use my Spanish.

Mind you, I tend to assume those situations are either ones where a) the
person is not comfortable in English or b) there's already other people there who also speak the language fairly well.

But, eh, I'm an American in Germany who probably speaks more English than is polite, though I do try with my German, depending on the situation.

I find it difficult to copy and paste text in Syncterm 1.1 to translate in google translator. I know that the network only uses English, with some sentences in other languages, in special cases. But if entirely in English. I respect that. And the area that Avon wants to create, FSX_ESP, would be a
    great help.

That is good news, so as not to disturb other people.
By creating the FSX_ESP area the network will be broader. In the future when

I had the same problem with Syncterm, so I went back to Syncterm 1.0 and copy & paste works again.

I don't speak Spanish very well, but I can read and understand it depending on the dialect. That's sad really, as I live in Texas, and a large portion of my neighborhood are native Spanish speakers, and some don't speak English.. It's likely because most of the people around me are from Mexico and El Salvador, and teased me for "Speaking Spanish like a Puerto Rican."

But if you do happen to speak Spanish here, I have no problem with it. _________________________________________________________________
