I think it is a briliant idea, and welcome the opening of this area very much!

I've always been interested in the idea of encryption and pgp but have the
same questions. What is the practical use of it and is there a primer
somewhere I can look at? As in a Big Dummie's Guide.

It's an area of interest of mine (and some others) where you can use various algorithms etc. to encode and decode information so as to make it "secure'
from sender to receiver.

I don't profess to know much about this topic at all, but I am interested in it. And wanted to have a space where by if we encode stuff and send stuff backwards and forwards it can be done in a way that doesn't interfere with
the usual chatter going on in other echos.

Have a look on the www for topics like PGP and Encryption for starters.

I'd say Nu (and Andrew) are probably far more on top of this topic than I :)

I too am new to it really. So here's a New Zealand page I found with some
info.

Well those are concepts, but I guess you are asking about the real implementations.
Eg Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) and the GNU reimplementation if it called the GNU Privacy Guard (GPG).

Those are encryption programs that you can use to encrypt messages and files, so that they are basically impossible to decode by brute force.

If I write a message to you I can encrypt it with your public key, so that only
people with your private key can read it.

It is also possible to sign, meaning that you can be sure that the message is by me and that it has not been altered, but it is freely readable by anyone.

Mainly privacy and authentication.
You can make sure that nobody else can read your message, and that the message is really written by you, and not somebody else.

I still have the issue that my key is stored on an old HDD, that I used to experiment with strange partitioning and raid stuff ...

I cannot remember how to mount it .......
I need to invest more time into that but I will definitely do it in the future ;)
