• Universal Mayhem BBS Door

From Mikesla@21:1/233 to All on Sat Sep 17 17:11:00 2022
    Hi folks.

Back in 1991 (I think it was in 1991) I had a BBS door installed called Univarsal Mayhem which is a very complex space game which was a multi-bbs door which populated the universe with other players via fido address's. I have it installed, and I'm needing to know if anyone has ever thought to start up a network for Univarsal Mayhem?

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here. If anyone does know if there is someone who is hosting the Node for this game I would like to join in, and have my BBS be part of it.

If you are wondering about the door here is a link to the BBS door game.

    http://www.bbsing.com/bbs_software/bbs_software_programs_1.html

    Take care.

    Thanks Ogg.

Too bad, Universal Mayhem is incredible. One of the best doors I have ever played. It even beats out Tradewars which is a tall order.

    Thanks again.

    Hi.

Cool. It's pretty complex, and it was a big game back in the day on Fido BBS's. I took part in it, and it was amazing.

Cheers, and I hope you enjoy it.

    Hi esc.

This door is something I have enjoyed since 1993. When it was big back in it's day many people played it, and it's actually one of the most complex space games made for BBS's.

I suggest that you read the manual because it will come in handy, and I'm sure you will see how much you can do in this game.

Outside of the obvious (at least I think is obvious) you are able to do something I haven't come across for any other BBS or even todays online games which is you can setup a special profile for your ship, and how it will react when you are away. You might be amazed on how solid this particular game option is if you ever decide to use it.

My hope is that this game will be brought back, and supported by BBS's again. I literally spends thousands of hours playing it back when it came out, and when I took part of Fido in 93.

Well, great to know you picked it up, and I hope you enjoy it.

    Cheers.

I'm somewhat of a layperson with some of these more strategic games like Ultimate Universe and TW2002. So I assume this will be a tough one for me to wrap my head around as well.

It looks to me like this game is designed intentionally for some sort of FTN aspect; I don't know how well independent games would work. That said I have very little familiarity with it at this point anyway.

Very cool. There is a utility which comes with the game called Uremote which checks, and packs, and tosses the packed data files, and whcih sends off to a hb (person who takes on that small job), and passes it off to those who have the game installed.

You know the deal, same with a few other online doors out there.

The game is very complex, and once you get to understand the commands it is one of the best games you can ever play online.

Reading the game manual is the only real way to understand how deep, and solid this game is.

    Cheers.

    definitely seems complex :P

    Cool, and it is.

I'm somewhat of a layperson with some of these more strategic games
like Ultimate Universe and TW2002. So I assume this will be a tough one for me to wrap my head around as well.

Once you get comfortable with the commands it becomes very easy. I had a hard time with it at first but after
about a 1/2 hour I was a pro. You can also string several commands in one command line which can make it so much more easier. There are examples of how to do it in the game manual.

Just take your time, if you make mistakes which we all do even those who have played it for awhile don't get frustrated. I'm not one of those complex game playing people either but I got pretty good with it.

I suggest that you read the manual because it will come in handy, and
I'm sure you will see how much you can do in this game.

Something I am admittedly terrible at doing, ha!

Haaa. Not a problem, learn by doing. Just type in HELP at anytime, and you will get a help menu. Then go from there.

Outside of the obvious (at least I think is obvious) you are able to do something I haven't come across for any other BBS or even todays online games which is you can setup a special profile for your ship, and how it will react when you are away. You might be amazed on how solid this particular game option is if you ever decide to use it.

Sweet, I'll give this a look. I think some games have "default behavior when attacked" or some such construct but this is interesting.

There might be, I just haven't played those games yet I guess.

My hope is that this game will be brought back, and supported by BBS's again. I literally spends thousands of hours playing it back when it
came out, and when I took part of Fido in 93.

It looks to me like this game is designed intentionally for some sort
of FTN aspect; I don't know how well independent games would work. That said I have very little familiarity with it at this point anyway.

Absolutely. Not only did you have folks playing the game on your BBS but it was specifically designed to
open the game universe to every BBS who used Fido. It was incredible.

Well, great to know you picked it up, and I hope you enjoy it.

    Thanks!

You're always welcome. Take care, and have fun with the door, it's well worth the effort.

Ok, cool. I'll invest the time to figure this out.

I've become spoiled over recent years where now I almost never read documentation and instead find someone doing something on YouTube. I bet if there was a true "This is how to play TW2002" video I'd be a pro by now, maybe someone reading this will want to cover Mayhem :P

found a download of it. i'll be putting it up on mine for sure if i can figure out how to node it for others i can run
    that too..
Just make sure it's 2.0. That last version is solid, and no bugs that I'm aware of. The name of the game is called MAYHEM20.
Also a small hint, read the game manual, it's well worth it.

YUP, I have a copy of it now and is up on my board if anyone wants to get it. I have it running on the board and have to sit down now and read multiple pages of the manual lol

    Hello Charles.

It's nothing like other space domination games from that era. It does quite a bit but once you get use the command structure it's pretty incredible. The person who made it made sure it stayed free, and he never charged for it.

For what you can do it outshines most other online games.

    Hard as old heck though.

I left all that as-is and changed one of the options to 'no' regarding whether or not to use that feature. I don't think we have any interbbs setup yet so it's all just local games.

    Hi Charles.

All of this is way above my pay grade. I have no real idea on how to even go about setting something like this up. I have read through the doc a few times, and I'm scratching my head.

I'll continue on reading, maybe something will click. I do remember back in the early nineties having the config setup to point toward the person who was the hub for transferring the netmail along with the ship data but that was so long ago I have forgotten everything since then.

It's somewhat sad to see a game of this quality to go to the wayside, and be overlooked. It is a great game. Yes a little complicated but it's well worth the effort.

If anything changes on my end I'll let you know.

    Cheers.

TL;DR - it's a regular DOS door that has a program that generates a netymail with attachment that goes to a hub. the hub takes them all in and spits them all back out to the other players.
