• New Project

From apam@21:1/126 to All on Tue Nov 3 17:49:14 2020
    Hi

I've had a few beers this evening. I thought I would share what I've been working on. It's a new BBS system. I was holding off, because, what apam
making another BBS system, how strange and unusual (sarcsam alert).

I've made 3 BBS systems over the past few years, Magicka, Titan and
Ghost. Magicka, while I'm pleased with how far it got, I don't think I'll continue with it. Titan, I found some issues with my message base implementation, and Ghost, was only for windows.

So, I decided to scratch them all and start a new. Trying to use the best
bits from each while making something new.

I've been working on it so far for 3 days, it's got message bases and
door support, but that's all so far.

Unlike magicka, this BBS will support non-ansi connections, so while I'm working on the basic features at present, I plan to add things like ANSI
full screen reader / lister etc.

If you'd like to poke around, the new bbs is located at:

    telnet://talismanbbs.com:11892/

I had to reset the userbase today, sorry to those couple of people who
logged in earlier (I told a couple of people earlier).

I'm having a break tonight, it's been a full on 3 days of coding :)

Going forward, I think this will be my main BBS project. Magicka won't go
away, but I doubt I'll continue on it. So if you're using Magicka, feel
free to continue, fork it if you like or whatever.

    Have fun,

    Andrew

I'll wait a bit for you to get this new one workable. I was going to
switch over to magicka, but never got around to pulling the plug on ezy
and then I lost interest. LOL Working a 48 hour work week again so probably
won't do much for a while.

Yeah fair enough. Your ezy bbs works pretty well, so i figure if it ain't
    broke :)

It will probably be a bit before I make this one available anyway, I want
to start working on documenting everything as I go as well. I know I've
done a lot in 3 days, but quiet a bit has been mostly reused from my
other projects. Like squish stuff I wrote for ghost, door stuff came from Titan, etc.

While I'm thinking I will eventually make it open source, I'm thinking to
start with I might just keep it for myself and if a couple of others want
to sign up for a "beta" test or whatever limit to that. It would keep the pressure down (self inflicted as usual lol).

I'd pay heftily for the ability to observe your process here. If you ever decided to make a video or blog post talking through your design and implementation strategy, I'd pay. :)

Dude, thanks so much for all you do. I logged in and hope to watch the project grow... if you need any support or help, I'm willing to test or do anything that I'm capable of.

I always love reading/using/seeing what you're up to. Keep going!!

Going forward, I think this will be my main BBS project. Magicka won't go away, but I doubt I'll continue on it. So if you're using Magicka, feel free to continue, fork it if you like or whatever.

Thanks for allowing it to be open; I am gonna poke around and have a LOOK. If nothing else, its great to be able to SEE how these systems work... you certainly don't have to make things open and I am thankful that people like you doso... w00t w00t!

    Howdy,

So if you would like to do something different (to scratch that itch), Videotex is pretty different and cool ... :P

I think that's a good idea. It would keep the pressure down as well as
allow you more breaks if it's only you and a couople other people who
    understand it's just a hobby! ;)

That last sentence is key. It's just a hobby :)

Excited to see this new one evolve as well.
