    Since I loved Telegard but never have been able to get it running under MS-DOS on VMware (at least not the Y2K patched version) I'm gonna give Telegard/2 a try. Just got to get OS/2 running, either on a Pentium 4 I have on a shelf or under VMware.

    Any advice on both matters are more than welcome.

    Dunno if installing OS/2 on hardware in 2019 is my idea of fun but hey it's a challenge so why not. Getting OS/2 to accept incoming connections via telnet and then passing them onto virtual com ports for Telegard to play with is a entirely different matter.

    I was considering the latest OS/2 about two years ago. I forget what they
    call it but I downloaded the live cd and gave it a spin.

    It was quite impressive and looked much as I remember OS/2 but my nic was
    not detected so I had no internet to surf at all. I don't know what it
    would take to get intenet support but if it could be done it would be
    hard to resist.

    When I did run OS/2 twenty years ago the browsers and other internet apps
    where quite far behind what everyone else was using. I'm not sure where
    any of that is today.

    seemed to run fine on my PC, but yeah getting the SIO and VModem working
    was a pain. I think the most annoying thing is you can't register it
    anymore. (the SIO drivers that is).

    Will you be using Warp 4 or something newer?

    SIO / Vmodem. Cracks are available for it and the author has said to
    go ahead and use them. (He's on facebook) Setup time for telnet
    support in os/2 is about 2 mins.

    I was a huge os/2 supporter back in the day (and well past the day) as
    Al said the apps are far behind, but most of the modernish ones are
    linux ports now.

    Yes, it was free to download. It wasn't big, 300MB if I remember right. I
    may have had to give them my email to get the download link, I don't
    quite remember now.

    If it's not on their site anymore I imagine it's available by torrent,
    maybe? It wasn't all that long ago.

    I figured I'd use the last version of OS/2 Warp 4 since it's supposed to be able to boot the installation from the CD-ROM.

    Sean Dennis, a sysop on Micronet (and Fidonet) has a virtual image for OS/2 that I believe is meant to be installed under VMware and with BBSing in
    mind. He is also the moderator of the BBSing 2.0 group on Facebook, where
    he has been discussing the image.

    All it would take is the *right* card, just like the old days. You could probably find one of those realtek RTL8139-based PCI cards for a buck at a thrift shop, or $10 on Amazon.

    There is a crack available for SIO 1.60d which the author has said is OK to use. Look for SIOREG.ZIP.

    But you can access Micronet on my Synchronet board, capitolcityonline.net. Telnet is 23, SSH is 2022, http is 80. :)

    I loved the old 3C509s. I'm pretty sure I ran OS/2 with 905s back in the day, they should be compatible with most anything these days.

    My OS/2 install is working just fine with a 3Com card, I believe it it one
    of those you have listed there or an Etherlink.

    I'm not 100% sure but I think I was forced to get a 3c509 when I was using NeXTSTEP 3.3 on my 486 PC at home. It was one of the few NIC's that was supported in that release. Now I have like 3-4 NE2000 in a box too, dunno what to do with them to be honest.

    Yeah cost is why the 3c905 was relatively rare in the wild - not all companies could afford to roll them out on all their PCs. Places I worked for tended to go with the NE2000, its clones and descendents (e.g. RTL 8029 and 8139 based cards).
