  • Linux Pack Message Bases

    Hi All,

    Does anyone know of a utility for Linux that packs JAM message bases
    without renumbering them?

    From JamNNTPd's ReadMe_hpt.txt:

    * Do NOT pack your messagebase with "hpt pack". When hpt packs a
    messagebase, it will also renumber it. This will cause the article
    numbers in JamNNTPd to change which will confuse most newsreaders.

    I have a personal message base with that posts weather/statistics/etc
    that I read & regularly delete from & then pack the message base. If
    using a newsreader to view the base I need to unsubscribe &
    re-subscribe to see any new messages.

    hptutil pack doesn't seem to work well at all, Golded often can't read
    the base after using this utility. I have been using sqpack which does
    work but also renumbers the base.

    This is a misprint/typo. "hpt pack" is an option for netmail only, and doesn't do what the above says it does. I believe it should say "hptutil pack" instead.

    I pack messages on my BBS because it can be handled there. Newsreaders is a different story, though.

    I thought hptutil was recently updated to be able to do this, but I could definitely be wrong there. Are you using the latest version?

    If there is nothing worth keeping, I don't bother packing. I just delete the JAM files of said echo and start over every so often when one or some message areas get too big.

    rm ALLFIX_FILE.*

    Then load up Golded and enter that area to re-create all the JAM files.

    That's a common one used here. ;)
