• New file echos

From Janis Kracht@1:261/38 to All on Sun Aug 25 18:32:10 2013
    Hi Folks,

LNX4FDN now includes backchannel file echos to facilitate uploads by others
    to LNX4 FDN areas.

% FDN: LNX4 Various Linux file echo FDN
    % Coordinator: Gert Andersen, 2:230/150
    %
    % PATH: DIRECT
    % HUB: No
    % ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    % File Echo Description
    % ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Area LNX4KIDS 0 ! LNX4: Educational Prog for kids aged 2-80
    Area LNX4APPS 0 ! LNX4: Applications for Linux systems
Area LNX4GAMES 0 ! LNX4: Games for Linux operating systems
    Area LNX4UP2HQ 0 *& LNX4: Files Upstream to LNX4 HQ (2:230/150)
Area LNX4UPAPP 0 *& LNX4: Linux Application Upstream to HQ
Area LNX4UPGAM 0 *& LNX4: Linux Game Upstream to HQ
Area LNX4UPKID 0 *& LNX4: Linux Kids Upstream to HQ
    %
    %

So if you have a linux game for example that you've found, or written, you can upload it to Gert in the LNX4UPGAM by hatching it in that area and sending it to your uplink. From there it will get here and to Gert.

    Take care,
    Janis

Or if it is a linux application or 4kids and my system will not announce it to any echo but should post the announce in my netmail so I know it and if there is a file_id.diz in the file I will get a description of the file.
The same will now work for Pascal/PascalNT 2 HQ 115:115/0 or as to my PascalNT FDN upstream echos.

    Take care,
    Gert

speaking of pascalnet files, what was that 000 file hatched with no description
    the other day?

also, could you wait a day between those huge files you've been sending out? my
3M down DSL isn't so bad but when i have to send to 10 others at 512K up on that same DSL, it really takes a lot of time and bogs everything else down... if there is a batch of files larger than 8Meg, wait a day between hatching each
of them... at least 12 hours, anyway... i can't wait till rainy season comes again and i drop to a hard earned 1.5M down and 128K up :/

I can understand that one, Mark.. over here even though we've got a good connection, between the number of people using our line in the house (3) and all my downlinks, Ron gets a little grumpy and he's paying my bill here <bg>

The 000 file is just empty file there by its tic file should delete 2 pascal files in echo pastool, where the 2 files was hatch to right echo right after.

There should not come so large files more for pascalNT and Pascal FDN in the next days as I now is looking after files for lnx4 and smaller programs in the next days.

    Take care,
    Gert

just to be clear, i was not speaking just of pascalnet but ALL that you hatch... if you hatch a file over 8Meg (eg) today, don't hatch any more that size or larger until at least 12 hours or wait till another day...

it is respectful of others who don't have the resources available that you might... we're lucky as all hades to have DSL out here 15 miles from town... i don't know if 6Meg down will ever appear out here but i doubt that the 768K up will change if it does... and we're damned not doing like others and paying for
much larger bandwidth only to not get one half or even one third of it...

    thank you for your consideration...

oh there is adsl users that have less then me here :(

it really takes a lot of time and
bogs everything else down... if there is a batch of files larger than 8Meg, wait a day between hatching each of them... at least 12 hours,

Gert could set outbound in his binkd to be bwlim to 64K, for files over 128K, i
hope its possible with bwlim, else its a feature request from me :)

if bwlim is "bandwidth limiting" then it would possibly work but only for what gert is transfering to others... it won't do a thing for what is transfered between others...

then there's that is isn't coming in that's so bad... it is going out... so many copies of the same large files being sent out to other machines... figure one 8Meg file being sent to 10 other systems and you're suddenly looking at 80Meg to be transfered... bwlim would extend the time needed to send it and would not help at all... in fact, it may even limit the speed coming in and that's definitely not desired...

anyway... i can't wait till rainy season comes again and i drop to

no, the cows and horses scratch themselves more on the barbed wire used for the
connection... since they are wet, it causes more line noise which causes slower
    transfer speeds =)
