It was sent in the correct form, according to the HowTo posted in this echo. If
there is some problem with my request, then the HowTo should be updated to reflect the correct requirements for FileFind messages.

How many people are actually still running ALLFIX and processing FileFind requests in this echo?

i hadn't seen anything in the HowTo related to specifying certain file names or
    such... only keywords...

    my system is :)

Allfix is NOT the only tool used for this ie, Filemgr also various BBS systems eg mbse .

Extract from Filemgr regarding usage of filefind:

    -------------------------------------------------------------
Suppose you are looking for the program RemoteAccess. You have a general idea of the name, but you don't know where to find it. Using the FileFind you enter a message in an echo mail conference which is meant for that subject. You address the message to 'Allfix' and on the subject line you enter one or more search keys. You can specify a file mask, but you can also use a keyword. Keywords should be preceded by a '/'.

An example of such a message:

    Fr: Vince Coen
    To: Allfix
    Re: RA_???.* /remoteaccess
    --------------------------

This message will be sent to various other systems, that's why it is an echo mail message. All systems that have FileMgr (or another program that supports his) installed will receive this message. Subsequently on that system
FileMgr starts searching for the files that match your specifications. If one or more files are found, FileMgr will send a reply message containing the names and descriptions of the files that were found, together with some additional information about the system where the files were found. This reply message can be sent either through net mail or through echo mail.

This concept was first implemented in the program AllFix by Harald Harms. That is also the reason why we speak of 'AllFix' requests, even though the feature is called 'FileFind' in FileMgr. Apart from FileMgr and AllFix there are also other programs that support this method of locating files.

Requests can be offered to FileMgr in two ways. Directly in a message base (I.e., QuickBBS, Jam etc), or by use of packets (*.PKT files). The reply messages created by FileMgr can also be sent in these two ways, or through Net Mail. The latter can be used to reduce a large flow of reply messages in an 'AllFix' conference. At this time of writing, FileMgr is the only program that is capable of sending it's reply messages through Net Mail. FileMgr can also send it's reply message in another area other than the one the original. -------------------------------------------------------------

    Hope it helps,

    Vince

well, his and my attempts did not trigger my allfix to even attempt a search...
is filefind based completely on "keywords"??

thanks for that! maybe my foo*.* doesn't qualify? hummm... then again, maybe this is a bug :pout:

the part that shows the filename format should be included in the forum's "HowTo" because there's nothing like that in there right now... then, again, what is there is pretty much the very same thing that the Allfix docs have on the topic... yes, without any filename format example :?

foo.*.* should work according to 'specs' just no similar file here and yes I did check my logs that my system did try to find.

But it is not impressed with other messages ie, the moderators "hey I'm here" stuff. That type of thing never occured way back etc, so, many filefind apps may have problems with it. This echo was ONLY for the "want a file who's got it" messages.

yeah, i don't have a file of similar name available, either... but the main point is how does one specify a certain filename mask with or without keywords????

ok, so what am i missing from the original post? the subject contained the necessary search params and the body of the message should be ignored by the software out there... so what's wrong with adding a message that a human might also read???

It does not bother mbse but some of the early file tossing apps might get upset and not respond to messages. I also write mine (and the software too) as per filefind specs. Assuming the other main file movers via filegate etc are linked into this area (assuming they have filefind set up) I am a little suprised that they have not responded in a positive manner.

One of my earlier apps for this used to respond and produce messages regarding the finding or not, even if the (not find) messages went to me as sysop.
At tleast it showed everything was working correctly. Now I have to look in the log files.

If thats does not help look at the allfix documentation.

i have yet to locate these... the HowTo post is almost exactly that of the allfix docs... neither states anything about how the filename format would be entered and my allfix doesn't record anything at all regarding finding a filefind message with just a filename in it :?

i've been thinking of doing something similar of my own coding if for no other reason than to get/have the filename format work in addition to the keywords...
i just need the spec which seems to be non-existant :(
