it showed me proper looking glyphs when i read it but this editor doesn't quote
them back for some reason... i suspect there was no CHRS control line or if there was one, it was wrong...

Yeah, the UTF-8 support is still a work-in-progress. Appreciate your using/testing it though!

    What terminal were you using?

according to google translate it says "Chinese Hello"...

i'm not sure why this editor can't quote it back properly, though... the glyphs render properly when being read... i think the first time i attempted to quote them, they were quoted as normal question marks... this time, after some updates were applied to the BBS source code and new binaries were built, they get quoted as upside down question marks... work continues, slowly but surely ;)

I was in shell telnet in KDE Konsole when I posted that. Now I 'm using telnet in Termux in Android phone. See below a long line of Chinese:

    well it cannot work :(
some byte happens to be control characters and my session is escaped

I use telnet in KDE Konsole.
When I input the character U+6765 the session escapes to telnet> prompt... like the CTRL+] pressed.

Line break may also be an issue: ----+----1----+----2----+----3----+----4----+----5----+----6----+----7----+--Σ╕µûçΣ╜áσÑ╜¡

    Can see above?
