    I'm using your utf8_850.chs file for GoldEd ( http://www.vlist.eu/downloads/utf8_850.chs ), with a few changes.

One of them is the support for the inverted question mark that we use in Spanish (¿), instead of the lowercase 'y' with diaeresis (ÿ), that is rarely used, I think. (You helped me with this some time ago.)

    But I've also changed:

    - the British pound (£), replaced by the lowercase 'a' with tilde (ã)
    - the Yen sign (¥), replaced by the lowercase 'a' with ring above (å)

(that was easy because you left them commented your file ;-)

I think it's better this way, for wider support of western European languages.

    My edited version:

I can go along with that, I do not recall ever using the 'y' with diaresis.

(You helped me with this some time ago.)

    I vaguely recall. ;-)

I can go along with sacrficing the Yen sign for the 'a' with ring above.

But sacrificing the pound sign? Life is making choices and when it comes to choosing between the Pound sign and the a with tilde, I choose the Pound. I think the Brittih made a mistake to not go for the Euro and keep the pound Sterling as their currency, but it is what it is and the Pound Sterling is still in wide spread use. OTOH, the only west European language that uses the 'a' with tilde is Portugese and there is only one Portugese sysop in Z2.

    Tnx.

You could also type GBP, like with EUR. :-)

    There's also R80...

I could type GPB or £ (Alt 156) and it will be correctly translated to UTF-8 in my outgoing messages. The problem is /incoming/. I do not have control over that. What are the chances that an incoming well formed UTF-8 sequence with the last byte is meant as a Pound sign or as an 'a' with tilde? In /my/ case? Since I do not master the portugese language and fidonet participants do not write to me in Portugese, the chance that it is meant as a Pound sign is far greater than it is meant as an 'a'with tilde.

    Your case may be different...

    Yes, I know.

Yes, I prefer support for languages, more than for special symbols. Each case is different. :-)

Anyway, a workaround could be: save one of the files with a different name, e.g. utf8_850alt.chs, then add this to golded.cfg:

    XLATCHARSET UTF8ALT CP850 utf8_850alt.chs

Then you can press Ctrl-J and switch to UTF8ALT to view it with the "alternative" conversion.

I've just done it now to be able to quote your pound sign above. ;-)

GMTA. I thought about that too, but you beat me to it. ;-)
