    Give hptutil a try, just be sure to have a backup first:

    $ hptutil fix -?
    Usage: hptutil fix [options]
    Options: -s </path/filename> - fix squish area
    -j </path/filename> - fix jam area file

    $ hptutil fix -j ~/fido/msgbase/netmail
    hptutil/lnx 1.9 2023-09-28
