• NNTP <-> HPT

    From Sean Rima@2:263/1 to All on Wed Apr 6 16:30:39 2022

    Hello everybody!

    Anyone got a suggestion for a linux port for importing nntp. I have tried compiling soupgate but hpt hates it's packets and I don't have the knowledge to sort it

    why not contact one of the existing large importers and just get a feed from them? AIUI Z1C provides a very large list of newsgroups... i'm sure there are others, too...

    I may try that. I got another source of Soupgate and it seems to be working. I have not tried exporting yet

    Synchronet?

    I use it to feed a downstream system with some Apple newsgroups.

    I fixed some low-hanging fruit bugs in Soupgate, but when it was working I realized that Soupgate is alpha quality software. Sopugate's FTN<->RFC gating was a mess 20 years ago and it doesn't help that there have been several new RFCs for the Internet Message Format released since then.

    It would be nice to have a simple Soupgate-like program, but Soupgate itself is trash and would need some work and modernization to be really useful. Nobody should use this software as it is for public gateways.

    Try Fidogate: https://github.com/ykaliuta/fidogate

    Unfortunately not as simple to configure, but for people who mastered the steep learning curve of hpt it should be doable ;-).

    I originally used Fidogate many many years ago. May take me a while to remember how to setup.
