For some reason my copy of Xlax appears to have stopped working and
I've had to download my nodelists directly for awhile. Anybody
know of another dos nodelist update program that I might use
instead?

Mine still works perfectly. What are the symptoms?
Qnode's Qdiff.exe works well. You can get it from http://archives.thebbs.org, or I can send it to you if you want.
I'm still using QNode on a DOS machine, though you'd probably have to
use a Pascal Pentium patch (I'm still using a 486). My boss uses Fastlst, I think, but on OS/2.
There's a version of QNode for OS/2 (I'm using it here), but I'm going
to be switching to FastLst soon.
I switched from QNode to FastLst some years ago. Never regretted it - FastLst is an order of magnitude faster and very flexible. ;-)
This OS/2 system uptime is 126 days 06:49 hours and 59 seconds

What program do you use to do that?
One problem with Fido software now is registering it, now that so many authors have disappeared...

next diff. However, it may not have been Xlax's fault after all since apparently it coincided with a different archiver being used to
archive the diffs. I'm going to see if I can manually unpack the next
I see Neil jumped in... I think FastLst is the one by Alberto
Pasquale.
Neil said it's much faster than QNode, especially if you have multiple networks, but as a point who only runs a regional nodelist I don't need that much speed.

Why not use something like GUS or UU, which check the archive type
and call
the right unpacker?
Not the problem - the unpacker was ARCE and the nodediff was .arc.
When the most recent one came in I manually unpacked it with ARCE
and it unpacked just fine. Then I ran Xlaxdiff and that worked.
Janis says there was a change in the program used to create the
.arc diff which might have caused the problem; I'm going to check
the next update and see if it works, and if there is a problem I'll
try it with the .zip.
Alberto's around. :) He gave me a reg key for NmFwd/2.

FastLst is still in development. It has been ported to Linux and is
part of the Husky project.

Does that mean it's now freeware, or some versions are and some aren't,
or what?
Hmmm... did you ever come across Hal Parks, who wrote MERGEPRO? His address was Carbondale. It's a program I might have registered, if I could ever have contacted him, but a web search doesn't get me
further forward.

As I recall, ARCE won't deal with .ARC files in a batch file so I
switched to using PKUNPAK several years ago. Copies of PK361.EXE
should still be around in various places but if you can't find one, I could send you one as an attachment to e-mail.
No batch file involved - and now that I check I'm not sure WHAT
xlaxdiff uses to unpack things - I thought there was a .ctl file associated, but all I can find is the one for xlaxnode which
naturally enough has nothing to do with archives. If it doesn't
work with the archived file this time, I probably will set up a
batch file to unpack things first, and I'm pretty sure I've got
pkunpack around here somewhere. If I don't, I'll go find one or
accept your kind offer. Thanks!
Unlike Xlaxnode, what xlaxdiff does is determined by parameters -- xlaxdiff /c etc. What each of the arguments does is documented in
the xlaxdiff.doc file which I can also send you.
Incidentally, the preferred extractor is ARCE.
Please do - it didn't come in the bundle I got the xlax software
in, and when I tried to register it the letter came back marked "deceased"...
Scott Samet did pass on to a better world some time ago. Do you have
an e-mail address? If so. I'll attach the archive.
Did he leave any heirs I could send the registration payment to?
Anyway, send it to kayshapero@earthlink.net
It's been freeware since Alberto Pasquale (the original author)
released the source code to it (and also NEF) in early 1999.
Never heard of him or the program...

Releasing the code is not quite the same thing as making free of
charge; is there a formal statement to the effect that it now no
longer requires registration?
Effective today, no registration is required for
