• File Echos, HTick, FwdFile Question

From Eric Renfro@1:135/371 to All on Sun Sep 6 17:04:27 2015
Okay. It's easy enough to get a current listing for ECHOMAIL for FidoNet, from the appropriate ECHOLIST file echo, but I'm trying now to get an actual FileEcho list for FidoNet, so I can get an up-to-date list of echos I can carry, and potentially offer for passthru.

First and foremost, where is this list obtainable from, and what file echo tag is it under?

Second question is actually in relation to Husky Tools's HTick, and how to get it to support using some file to list available passthru areas available, (or merged as-if they're all available already, either way).

I read in the fidoconfig documentation itself that there is FwdFile for fidonet.na formatted files, but this seems to likely be for echomail, maybe fileechos. If it does both (which doesn't seem right, but possible either way), I suppose it could be useful in that regards in my setup since I split my htick out into seperate configuration files as it is, so if htick module is in use, it uses specific config files related to just htick, including ftn-fileecho links. Is there another option I should be looking at?

In further looking, in the htick.html itself, I see ForwardFileRequestsFile, which looks more promising to be for fileechos themselves. So, I guess I just answered my own question while typing this. LOL

Though, I still need to know where to find said fidonet.lst I for all the FidoNet FileEchos available, and what format it should be in, if anything different than what's available for said fileecho list file, hopefully containing echo tags and descriptions of each.

    http://www.filegate.net/filegate.zxx

The filename is filegate.zxx (the zxx just means "all zones")

The file echo it is released in is FG_WORF.

FG_WORF stands for FileGate, World's Only Reliable Files <vbg>

At the beginning of the FileGate, Adam Strack and I were in in a mood the day we named that file and tick file area :) :) Probably caused by some consternation from dealing with "people" and trying to lighten things up a bit Lol

Via freq, you should be able to get it here at 1:261/38, filegate.net:24554 (standard binkp port). Or, let me know where you want me to send it, and I'll send filegate.zxx over to you. :)

there's not really such as an echolist for files in play in fidonet... just like mail distribution systems, there's also file distribution systems... currently in fidonet, the filegate.zxx file is the closest you will get... its format, however, comes from the original TIC and RAID programs and is also known as the filebone format... the files in the filegate.zxx list are distributed by the filegate distribution system...

i haven't looked at anything file distribution related with htick but considering the group it comes with, i would say that it should support it... maybe by a different name, though... and likely maybe only on import...

    [time passes]

hummm... i see ways to export that but nothing about importing it into the husky area format... i suspect it would be easy to convert with a script and having it as an include file like i do my echomail areas...

    Hi Eric,

The file your looking for is filegate.zxx and it's in the fg_worf
    file area.

The rest I can't remember off the top of my head but looks like you
    just about have it.. :)

I did manage to find that much, and see the filegate.zxx, and yes,
while I'm /almost/ there, I'm not sure... what format HTick is
expecting. Does Htick support that zxx format? I'll be tinkering

    internally to test against.

The format used in filegate.zxx is the same format that has always been used for File Echos. Htick should import fine if I'm understanding what your asking here <g>

So, I finally got Htick setup to handle FileEcho forward requests. It lacks the ability to %LIST them in the listing, but it does send the requester an acknowledgement netmail to say it's been forwarded when it's validated for the uplink.

The problem is, the htick doesn't understand the filegate.zxx format, so when using that file as the filefixFwdFile, requests get replied back with "no uplinks to forward". When I converted a partial of the file to the echomail-style NA format, TAG<space>DESC, it works just fine.

With that said.. Would it be reasonable to request that the filegate.zxx be published in the same format as echomail.na files, so that automation could be easily obtained for systems like this? Yes, I could make a tool to convert the file myself, and likely I will, but that will take some time to write that tool, make it extract from the fg_worf archives as they come in, process the conversion, drop it down in the place it needs to be.

An alternative would be to write some tool to convert it one time for the publishing end, and just distribute it like that simaltaneously. :)

Lemme know your thoughts on this.

Well, it's not hard coded at all. It's actually very specifically configured to use a filename, full path and all, in example:

    filefixFwdFile /sbbs/data/filegate.na

It's just seeming to not parse the filebone file itself. Seems to use the same echomail.na file format for fileechos as well without any distinguishing differences in the format. heh. I'll bring it up in the husky tools forums and see what they say about it. It's obvious it wasn't designed for it.

Is there a publication of the filebone document format that I could use for reference?

Yes, exactly. Originally we included this text in filebone.na:

% This format is based on the TIC and RAID programs. Indeed, you can directly % use this file as part of your RAID config file. For example, the following
% DOS command could be used to create your new RAID.CFG file from the weekly
% FILEBONE.NA file along with prefix and suffix files (RAID.BEG and RAID.END)
% containing your personal configuration information:
    %
    % Copy RAID.BEG + FILEBONE.NA + RAID.END RAID.CFG
    %
    %

Should work with filegate.zxx as well.. haven't tried it though..
