• Separate echo subscriptions for nodes

How does FE know which echoes the downlinks are each subscribed to ? or do all downlinks need to download all their uplink's areas and delete bad / unconfigured messages ?

because they're kept in the list with that link's other data...

or do all downlinks need to download all their uplink's areas and

    no, that's just plain st00pid...

The same way any other echomail processor does. You subscribe to the
areas on the uplink's end by sending netmail to their echomail processor
and then you set up the areas in your BBS software and in FE using FESETUP.

The downlink sends a Areafix request via a netmail message to the uplink. In that netmail message addressed to "Areafix" at the uplinks's FTN address. The Areafix password (That both uplink and downlink have agreed upon) is usually placed in the subject line. In the text of the message is a list of echomail areas that you wish to connect to or disconnect from. Your uplink can assist you as the syntax of the areafix changes slightly based on the software used. Once the areafix message is received by the uplink the message is processed
and the necessary actions are taken to connect/disconnect the requested
    areas.

If I were a downlink of the system you are posting from I would address a netmail
    message:

    Example: Msg : 5 of 8 Pvt
    From : Your Name 2:5020/960.1 13 Feb 99 19:51:12 To : AreaFix 2:5020/960 15 Feb 99 21:57:42 Subj : PASSWORD <- Your Password ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ RA_UTIL <- Add (link) area
    +FN_SYSOP <- same
    -SYSOPS <- Remove (unlink) area
SYSOP.* <- Add all areas beginning with SYSOP. -ALT.???.COMP.* <- Remove all areas that match this pattern
    * <- Add all areas available for you
-* <- Remove all linked areas
%INFO <- Ask for general information
%LIST <- List all available areas
%LIST FIDO.* <- List available areas that match pattern
%LIST ! SBBS.* <- List all available areas except

-+- <- Signifies end of message to be processed

There are usually more commands available but these are the one that I remember
