I'm running ele. I'll gladly supply any info as needed. If I run a "fastecho toss" the window for the tossing displays properly, but it "locks up" (i.e. the clock keeps ticking, but messages don't get tossed). Any help would gladly be appreciated.

Have you run "FeSetup.exe" yet, Marty?

What you say leads me to think it may be a path (in the config file) or memory problem.

In either case I thought FE would kick-out with a logfile error or some such with which to troubleshoot the prob; I can't recall FE ever just locking up, not in recent times anyhow (FE's been running here for over 14 years).

Which version of FE are you running (DOS, DPMI or OS/2)? I use the DOS .exe which relies on enough conventional memory being available.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Yep, everything has been configured for a while now. I just went through and saw that I didn't have a logfile set, so thanks for that suggestion. I've got 14MB of stuff tossing right now and it stopped processing almost immediately (the progress bar hasn't moved for a while) with the toss clock still ticking away. I set up a swap file in case it was a memory issue. I'm running the DOS version. The paths all appear to be correct.

I would guess the pkt is corrupt. Try removing that packet from the directory and see if FE continues on.

If it does, my next question is what kind of message base are you tossing to?
If it's Hudson base make sure the file is under 16MB. (Then switch to Jam or something else).

No, the packet is =from= your system going =to= Daryl's system. Does Daryl know he might be on the receiving end of some raw mail packets?

What program produced it? That product code (00FE) isn't FastEcho.

In any case, it might be worth your while actually setting a 'temporary outbound' directory path in your config as there's a good chance FastEcho is using the iRex queue as one. (Same goes for the other 'inbound' types as well,
just so that they have some sort of values better than null.)

Whoops. From lurking in the Win95 echo, I've been led to believe that Win2K has the absolute minimum support for DOS apps, and, a person has to know how to
get it to perform properly (and that's not me, BTW). You've picked one of the very worst versions of Windows to attempt running a DOS-based node on, Marty.

My wife's machine (XP Pro) takes a month of Sundays to just do simple stuff with my BBS/mailer configs. It's a real PITA and I very rarely use it; 'blue moon' stuff.

I recommend you hunt down a copy of Win98se.

The only reason I'm using frontdoor is because it was an available option. I really don't use a front end mailer. I could use an actual inbound and outbound mail directory, but I don't know what irex would do since it uses holding and queue instead. I'm thinking of switching from irex to binkdwin, but I do have some email based nodes.

what, exactly, are you trying to do? there's only three or four things that a mail processor like FE needs...

    inbound directory (ie: c:\mail\inbound)
    outbound directory (ie: c:\mail\outbound)
    archivers
    local storage message bases

some setups allow for a few more features (like a secure inbound, fileboxes, etc) but they are not always necessary or desired...

the point that i'm trying to get to is what, exactly are you wanting to do? why
keep jumping from this package to that package and experiencing the same apparent problems? pick one and get it working properly with _one_ network... then, if you are into the multiple networks thing, add one more network and get
the two working together... then add more, one at a time, getting each working with all the others...

the biggest problems i see is folk jumping in and joining a whole slew of networks and then fighting the software that they're trying to learn as they go
while being swamped with all this and that from everywhere until they finally give up and just dump it all with a bad taste in their mouth...

i was completely floored when i read your message the other day about having had this problem for a year or two... that should never have been... indeed, 30
days at the most if that long, even... to me, it looks like something is configured with the inbound and outbound directories being reversed... i dunno... i don't think that all the questions have been answered or all the settings posted... i do know that i've not seen any registrations or traffic on
my FE support forums on my website if that's something easier for you to work with due to not being able to process FTN mail without problems... maybe that's
why we don't see that much traffic from you asking for assistance?

Ok, I didn't realize there was a path setting in irex for the mailer type (oh, and I also switched to binkley since fd didn't show an outbound directory in that configuration area), I had only seen the queue and holding directories. I've got irex and fastecho now set up as you suggested and we'll see if it works. Thanks!

Thanks to Mark too, I was just confused and didn't know what to set where. On the 2 years without working, that's because I switched to fmail and didn't try to get any help.

I'll keep you guys up to date and if I continue to have issues, I'll try to explain them a little better.

Your welcome. It should work setup the way I posted as they were screen shots of the settings here.

I'll keep you guys up to date and if I continue to have issues, I'll
try to explain them a little better.

Let us know if it's working anyway. :)

    Cheers,

    + 09 Jun 14:18:31 FSTE end, FastEcho 1.46

I might need to make the log more verbose, but afer it created the outbound echomail packet, FE created a directory called OUTBOUND.00A instead of using the outbound mail directory. Because of this, the packets never go out, or so it looks like.

    I'm definitely closer...

Make sure Irex has been told your now using Binkley style outbounds, (Same as
FE) and then all should be well. The outbound.00A is bink's way
of doing things. There should also be a xLO file that points to it.

    I'm definitely closer...

You are! You'll get it man!

as it is supposed to do... all BSO (bink style outbounds) operate this way... 00a is for zone 10...

instead of using the outbound mail directory. Because
of this, the packets never go out, or so it looks like.

you need to check your irex config and ensure that it is set for BSO... you also need to ensure that you have all your addresses listed in all your FTN packages... mailers and tossers... without that, nothing for zones other than your default/main one will work...

*.FLO is in the outbound.00a directory, so I'm not sure if it'll be found. I do have binkley set for irex and fe. The outbound mail is still sitting in that directory.

This was the thing I missed Marty! If the address isn't listed somewhere (and just for arguments sakes make sure you using either all with the point or none with the point. (ie: 1:229/452.0)

Done. The league 10 echoes finally went out, we'll see about the game packets. Now I just need to experiment with regular fidonet, which should be working now.

Is there a current registration form? All I could find in the archive was one from april 1997. Unfortunately, since I've never gotten this to operate properly, I've never registered it.

    Shawn,
Thanks to you and a few other people (we can't leave Mark out!) everything is working "groovily". I just had some confusion about the paths in irex and fastecho. Once I got that straightened out it worked great (sorry for all of the confusion and frustation guys...). Now I just have to buy it since it works so well.

    Thanks again!
