From George Pope@1:153/715.1275 to Steve Asher on Fri Nov 25 06:37:10 2005
On (23 Nov 05) Steve Asher wrote to George Pope...
How about the first time God asked Moses to give water to the
people, Moses was commanded to strike the rock with the staff.

Do you think Moses was "snookered"? More likely, striking the rock
to give water was a fore-runner of the "rock of our salvation", who provides the water of life freely.

This second time God says "take up thine rod(ie. the same as last time) and speak to the rock" (a very subtle change in verb. . .
    the
fact he was told to take up the rod would make it seem obvious
    that
    a repeat performance was required!)

No need to strike the rock for water a second time ... merely ask for
the water of life & it will be provided.

And Moses was supposed to know this several thousand years ahead of time
    how?

If the prophets "clearly taught" that no mediator was required,
    why
did Jeremiah the prophet, in Jeremiah 31:31-32 record the Lord as saying... "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will
    make
a new covenant with the house of Isael, and with the house of
    Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in
    the
day that I took them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant
they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord."

What do you think that new covenant might be? Who do you think
the mediator of the new covenant might be?

Better to translate that as a "renewed covenant" because "new" implies
the old gets done away, and that's impossible with a COVENANT(much
    different than a CONTRACT!)

    Because I care,

did Jeremiah the prophet, in Jeremiah 31:31-32 record the Lord as saying... "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will
make a new covenant with the house of Isael, and with the
house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made
with their fathers in the day that I took them out of the
land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was
an husband unto them, saith the Lord."

What do you think that new covenant might be? Who do you think

implies the old gets done away, and that's impossible with a
    COVENANT(much different than a CONTRACT!)

Why would it be "better to translate that", when the prophecy clearly
refers to a new covenant ... not according to the covenant that ...

    I.e. new ... not the old one ... a new one ... a better one ...
Let it sink in ... it is easy, if you truly do possess the ability
to read and understand scripture that you claim in another echo.

I very much doubt it, though you do have a talent for weaseling!

    Weasel out of this: :)

Jeremiah 31: 31 -> "Behold the days come, says Jehovah, that I will
cut a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of
Judah, not according to the covenant that I cut with their fathers
in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of
Egypt [...] (Hendrickson Hebrew Greek English Interlinear Bible)

You can weasel, & "translate" it to "mean" whatever you want, but it
    will be in vain.

The new covenant has replaced the old covenant - full stop.

    Cheers, Steve..

Then just asking for the "water of life" should've been sufficient the first time, eh?

The rock has a number of uses and meanings in scripture; striking the
rock brought forth the water of life, but there was no point in striking
the rock a second time - simply ask for the water of life by faith, and
    it will be given.

The Rock can provide salvation, or it can be a stumbling stone for
those who reject it, as in Isaiah 8:13-15 ... Sanctify the Lord ...
and he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and
for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel ... and for a
snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem ... and many shall stumble,
and fall, and be broken ...

Or Isaiah 28:16 where the Lord God says he lays in Zion a foundation,
a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation...

Psalm 118:22-23 refers to the builders rejecting the stone which became
the head stone of the corner ... this is the Lord's doing ... it is
    marvellous in our eyes.
