My mother and her siblings came to the U.S. using the name of their stepfather. Their own father died when they were babies and my grandmother remarried. Their stepfather seems to have adopted them as my aunt's
passport shows her name as Dora Kagan which was her stepfather's surname.
They lost their father so young they didn't remember him and looked upon
their stepfather as their own father.
What I wonder is if there was such a thing as legal adoption in Poland
and/or Russia in the period from 1905 through 1921 when they came to the
U.S.
