In principle that is the same error I had with 1.1a75 o Linux.
The error is not there when binkd is compiled without perl-hooks,
The cause must be in the latest changes in perlhooks somewhere between
    1.1a73 and 1.1a75.

Can it have been my system that caused it?

It seems like you managed to contact my system while I temporarily had redirected incoming calls from my Argus-clone to binkd -- in my 24 hour long, desperate struggle to try and find out why my static SixXs tunnel no longer worked. My dynamic (aiccu) tunnels both have worked without problems after my IPv6 POP server came back after five days downtime.

    on Win32, like XP too...

i honestly don't remember right now but it is the old windows95/98 shite which is, TTBOMK, dropped for binkd... it is well out of servicable life ;)

    I agree with that! ;)

Maybe you can test one of the versions without perlhooks?

    binkd11a77-msvc-binkd9x-static.zip binkd11a77-msvc10x64-4gb-ipv6-static-zlib-bzlib2.zip

The x64 probably not. And I don't know what the 'binkd9x' stands for,
and it lacks IPv6. But you could just test it.

The 64 bit vesrion won't run on my system and I am not going to bother with the
9x version. That would be two steps back and changing two much at the same time
is not a good recipe for testing.

Btw: I hope 11a81 for windows is published tomorrow... ;)
On linux without perlhooks it's working for me.

Unfortunately it is no better than 11a77 and there is no version 32 bit version
with ipv6 but without the perl hooks.

There are no changes regarding perlhooks. 76 upto 81 are related to my commits regarding ip address 0.0.0.0 and [::] detection. That was a bit noisy because I'm not too familiar with the pull request process.

It seems the bug is still there. binkd just crashed on me, two minutes after changing the config again. So, i can't give you a postmortem report. I simply terminated itself, no error information.

No. I did use the -C option before. Now it is runnng without any option.

    2 days running - no errors. :-(

Could you please show binkd logs (as detailed as you have) before the crash?

And do you have "exec" parameters in binkd config? If yes, it's possible that listen socket inherited by executed external utility, then binkd reopen the socket on config reload, and cannot bind listen socket because it's "already in
    use".
Problem with socket inheritance described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12058911/can-tcp-socket-handles-be-set-not-inheritable
AFAIU it's possible to workaround by DuplicateHandle() and set "noinherit" attribute, but it's not easy to test it in binkd.

Sorry this is all I have. At 21:30:15 it just exits. No error message in the log.

And do you have "exec" parameters in binkd config? If yes, it's
possible that listen socket inherited by executed external utility,
then binkd reopen the socket on config reload, and cannot bind listen socket because it's "already in use". Problem with socket inheritance described here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12058911/can-tcp-socket-handles-be- set-not-inheritable AFAIU it's possible to workaround by
DuplicateHandle() and set "noinherit" attribute, but it's not easy to
    test it in binkd.

Yes, I have to exec statements in my config:

exec "!d:\\fido\\allfix\\allfix.exe RP -SRIF *S" *.REQ
    exec d:\\fido\\batch\\mailrcvd.bat *

It would surpise me if the socket problem plays a role here. No programs that use sockets are called. Just the tosser, the file processor, some nodelist processing. nothing that acesses the TP stack.

Over here I have 4 exec lines. Two of them just run scripts to do some external
stuff, but every one of them quote the path to what is supposed to be executed.
I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but it's worth a shot I suppose.

    exec "!/usr/local/bin/srifreq *S" *.[Rr][Ee][Qq]
    exec "/sbbs/ftn/fido/husky/bin/htick.sh" *.tic

I may give that a try when I run out of option. Just pushing buttons without understanding what I am doing is not my preferred way of trouble shooting.

First I have to test 1.89 without that button pushed.

Previous W32 versions of binkd (<= 1.88) occasionally crashed when run with the
-C option when the config file or one of the include files declared in the config files changed and it reloaded it config. 1.89 appears to be stable, but to test its stability I created an event that touches an empty file every five minutes. This empy file is declared as an include in my binkd.cfg. This forces binkd to reload its config every five minutes.

    So far, so good...

Ahhh.... even with earlier versions I never had an issue with binkd updating itwelf when a cfg/txt file was changed. Still don't have it with 1.89 either... guess I was lucky.

    :)

    Enjoy!!

i'm seeing a problem in a81 on linux... i've seen it for a while but haven't reported it... i built and installed a81 on 2016 Jan 23... guess i need to update my repo and build again to see i the problem is fixed...

    [time passes]

i have a91 in operation now... using michiel's trick to include a zero byte file, it looks like this is actually fixed in at least a91... at least it isn't
dropping to the command line like it used to do...

Stable enough I'd say. I will continue to keep it running until the config has been reloaded 10.000 times.

Has the size of your config files changed in this period? Or only the date/time

The only thing that changes every five minutes is the date/time stamp of en empty include file. ( I asked for a 32 bit version of touch, remember?) ;-)

    I know. ;)

But if only the date/time of the config file changes it's a very limited test, and not very realistic. If for instance the same reserved memory is used to load the new file it doesn't matter if the new file has the same size or is smaller. But if it's bigger you could get a memory violation...

But if only the date/time of the config file changes it's a very

It IS what I wanted to test. With earlier versions I noted that binkd crasched when the config reloaded. t even crached when at the transistions to and from DST. When tracing errors, always change look for the minimum chabge that will provoke the error. Don't change many things at the same time, because then you still don't know what triggered the error. In this case I choose to ony change the date/time stamp as the minimum change that caused binkd to crash in previous versions.

If for instance the same reserved memory is used to load the new file
it doesn't matter if the new file has the same size or is smaller. But

True, but that would be /another/ problem than the one I am tracing.
