Subject: Microsoft to acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion

    via NNSquad
Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced it has reached an agreement to acquire GitHub, the world's leading software development platform where more than 28 million developers learn, share and collaborate to create the future. Together, the two companies will empower developers to achieve more at every stage of the development lifecycle, accelerate enterprise use of GitHub, and bring Microsoft's developer tools and services to new audiences.

All GitHub users forthwith will be required to run Windows 10 or subsequent Microsoft operating systems with all privacy options disabled, manage their code only by voice via Cortana, and install the new Microsoft Clippy 2018! Microsoft Office Assistant on all of their devices. Microsoft will now scan all GitHub materials for patent infringement and turn violators over to local authorities for arrest.

The setup is not evil in and of itself. It's all the other crap associated with it. Github has had issues in the past (do a web search for "github sjw issues" and you'll see what I mean). I do have an account with Bitbucket but I am pondering just setting up my own Github repo when my living situation allows it.

Though, with Cheepware, I may decide to just put everything in a big ARJ archive and let it loose. A lot less overhead for me.

I remember when I was hurting on disk space, I went to ARJ from ZIP,
and saved quite a bit. But, I'm not sure what the "preferred" archive is
on a BBS...I think mine are now ZIP.

I get better compression with my system with ARJ than ZIP. Then again, I am using the open-source version of ARJ which, IIRC, has a slightly better optimized compression algorithm than the original.

The only thing I use ARJ for is my Cheepware archives. I tried using ARJ for Micronet's nodelist and there was mutiny in the network so I quickly abandoned that idea.

Yeah, I think the predominate archive is ZIP. Love the tagline that

Glad we don't have to go through the Archiver Wars again -- ARC versus
ZIP, PAK is just as good, really... ARJ and LZH shaving off a tiny bit of

My dialup BBS went from a 32 MB drive to a 320MB drive and stayed that way

I recall a local BBS (Pacific Northwest Archive if memory serves) went big into DWC when it came out. He converted every compressed file in the file areas to DWC. I don't recall what the next "big thing" was after that, but I think it was ARJ.

I wish I'd kept more backups of those days. I had a 250 MB Colorado tape drive and later a 4GB Travan drive, which are long gone. With disk space being a concern, I rotated off messages pretty quickly.

The only backup I have is a CD-R of the BBS from 1999 or so, a good 9 years had rotated out before that.

I had one of those Colorado Tape Drives myself years ago.

Right now, the weather pattern is so stormy, that the BBS will be down
more than up, and it'll be awhile before I can do another backup.
