Thanks everyone! It's nice to be part of the family!

Like I told Janis, we tried quite a few of the still supported BBS packages out
there, and settled on BBBS. We actually loved the fact that the user interface is not like every other board out there.

Downside is, the documentation is terrible, but Janis and Kim have been very helpful in getting us going.

Hopefully Kim will take my suggestions for the next version.

    1) Duplicate IP checking (ability to limit connections by IP) 2) ANSI (y/n) prompt at login
    3) Ability to turn off language selection.

The latter, we want to modify the system a bit, and I have a hard enough time with English, let alone 3 other languages.. LOL

    1) Duplicate IP checking (ability to limit connections by IP)

If you want to limit connections (block extra connections from same IP), you can configure your firewall to do that. At least Shorewall can do that.

If you want to kick out older connections, then some bz-scripting could handle that. This works only for telnet connections.

so what if the guy is using your web server and his mailer attempts a mail transfer? that won't work if you block in the firewall based on IP only... it would seem to be better for the application to reject multiple connections from
the same mailer... binkleyterm, frontdoor, binkd and other mailers certainly do
this with their busy semaphores... if the semaphore already exists and isn't too old (if they have an option for semaphore age), they will reject the incoming connection with something like "BUSY" or "No servers available"...

Firewalls can block per IP per service. So web server / telnet / mail are counted on different quotas.

Native blocking support inside BBBS(D) would be better, but with firewall config you can do it right now, without waiting for update.

sorry, no... that's an erroneous assumption... the firewall i use doesn't have quotas and an IP block is total... not per port...

    absolutely...

in some cases... i don't see folks replacing their existing firewall solutions with shorewall or similar, though... i know we won't be doing that over here because our's is highly customized... then again, it is the perimeter firewall for three active networks ;)

    Hi Mark,

Native blocking support inside BBBS(D) would be better,

    absolutely...

I use bbbs' inet.bbb file to limit some IP addresses' access to specific ports - when troublemakers come around.

You can use this file under BBBS to do so:

    [inet.bbb]

    !HTTP <ip address>
    !telnet <ip address>

Where ! says that protocol may not be use by <ip address>

This doesn't interfere with binkp mailer functions so if that <ip address> wants to just deliver mail via binkp, there is no problem AFAIK. He/she could not however deliver via telnet or HTTP given the above. If he did, he'd be bounced and hopefully this would cause him to contact me to discuss the problem

True, I've always used iptables over here. Works for me.

    fail2ban + shorewall

latest fail2ban supports ipv6 now, and it interface fine with shorewall in dual
    stack

but yes it still use iptabels and ip6tables

only debian and ubuntu can make it not work :)
