    Hi Al,
being that you bought it recently, i'd say that it's the new
adjustment method. Old visitherms had that red thing that just slid up
and down the temp display when you turned the adjustment knob. now
they have a click stop feature (meaning that there are notches inside
the heater that stop the adjustment at precisely where you want them
to). The reason for the new feature, is that the old ones would slip
out of adjustment after a while, and the temp would drop in your tank.
The click stop feature stops this from happening, but it is a bit
harder to adjust. If you have one of the old models, then yes you have
one that is a bit unusual. Hope that helped!!

    I recently purchased a Visi-therm Deluxe heater.
I had no problems with initial installation and adjustment (dry).

Now a couple of days later I wanted to adjust the temperature
slightly. The heater has a cone shaped knob with ridges, but I find
it is impossible to turn with one hand while under water.
My fingers tend to slip off the tapered knob and if I can get a good
grip, the entire heater will turn in the holder.

I find it necessary to remove the heater from the holder. Then hold
the glass with one hand and turn the knob with the other. Then
    remount the heater.

Is this typical with this heater?
Since it is new and I have never owned this brand before, I am
wondering if mine is abnormally difficult.

I have three of these heaters in my aquariums and mine too are very
difficult to adjust with wet hands, even when I pull the heaters out of the water. In my opinion these seals are too tight.
