• Gravel filtering

From Sean Dennis@1:18/200 to All on Mon Feb 6 18:33:52 2006
    Hi, everyone.

After being sick and then busy for over a month, I finally changed out some of my aquarium's water (about four cups' worth). I added the stress reliever/dechlorinator and algae preventer and then I noticed all the junk in the water. I bought a simple gravel tube a while ago (stick it in and it sucks
the stuff up by gravity) and I was wondering what was the best way to use it.

I'm gathering that I put the tube in the aquarium, move it until suction occurs
and because the pail is lower than the aquarium, all the junk filters out. I've never done it before, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
    :)

    Later,
    Sean

P.S. The fish are doing quite well despite their treatment. :) My wife and I are considering purchasing a 10-gallon aquarium to help them have a happier and
more comfortable living space as they've grown a little bit and seems a little more crowded in there than before.

    Sean,

I have faucet powered gravel filter thing, basically the same concept.
It uses water flow from the faucet to create a vacumn and suck
    water/gunk out of the gravel.

Being that it can draw a good amount of water, be prepared to hit one
spot and move to the next. I generally have my wife looking at the
bottom of the tank (metal stand) and instruct me on larger deposits of
the gunk. Course this is with a 29 gallon tank, so I clean until it's
about 30-40% down and then replace the water with treated water. I try
to do it once a month, but sometimes forget and then the next time
takes extra work. But, it's a real good way to clean the tank.

Mine's just a el cheapo vaccum suck thingie. You put the back end into a pail and pump the business end up and down in the aquarium until it starts suctioning. I just changed the water, but boy, there's a lot o' junk down there. I'll probably do it this weekend sometime.

    Thanks for your help!

Sean, that'll do the job, but it might take a few applications since
you are limited on the amount of water you can pull out, since it is a
    smaller tank.

I too was amazed at the junk in there! :) I am down to just 2 large
angels right now, and boy do they make a mess, even with just 2 of
them. I've also got about 8 glass shrimp in there now, they don't make
much of a mess and spend most of their time hiding from the Angels.

are those glass shrimp also known as ghost shrimp?

i'm also not surprised that they are hiding from the angels 'cause angels are members of the oscar family ;)

I think the are one in the same, little things, mostly less than 1 inch
    in length

Yea, poor little guys, My step son has a emporer scorpion and likes to
watch it feed on crickets, then I told him my angels like shrimp, so he
bought so, but so far has missed any mass feasts. Shrimps are a bit
    smarter than crickets I think.
