• demise of FB w/FF and w/Opera

Well.. It has finally come to pass. Facebook doesn't operate
    100% with FireFox 52.8.0 or Opera 36.

The dynamics required to start a message in the Messenger panel
for replies doesn't work. The cursor might sit blinking in the
message field, but there is no reponse with keystrokes.

As much as I lothe using FB, it is however the only way to
reach (or spy on) some friends or relatives.

It might not be a sign of demise for Facebook. I have a feeling Facebook (like other companies) probably focus more on their mobile app rather than making sure their web site works 100% for desktop users, unfortunately. I've noticed even their web site these days seems more optimized for mobile use. If I make my web browser window bigger on the screen, I think it looks a little weird - The news feed takes up a fixed-width center column, with some links on the left and contacts on the right. If you have a big monitor and maximize the browser window, there's a lot of empty space on the page.

This what I see (or rather, don't see) using Opera 36.

    The Messenger window never populates.

use another computer and another browser and see if you have that issue.

Are those current versions? I'm playing around with switching from Chrome to Firefox (again), but I barely use Facebook these days.

I stopped using remote desktop to access my work laptop; instead I've been using Edge on my home system and using the Microsoft 365 apps. I'm pretty happy with the setup, and like being able to keep work in a different
    browser.

I think Opera 36 is the highest that is supported on XP. My XP
    laptop is my preferred machine.

Anyway.. the Facebook matter kinda cleared up actually. There
was apparently a big lag in the prompt field in Messenger. The
delay is not as bad anymore.

I'd consider that a qwake up call to install Tiny Core Linux or some other lightweight operating system on it which is still modern.Unless the thing has less than 2 Gb of RAM, in which case it is not much use as a desktop if you load a new OS on it.

yeah someone shouldnt be running windows xp nowadays. he can get a computer that runs windows 10 for pretty cheap.

i have 3 computers in my basement that can run windows 10 just fine. that's if the moisture didnt fuck them up

I have noticed that some of the distros would allow operating
newer versions of FF. That would be good.

The Thinkpad has 3GB ram - the max. I have tried several
LiveCDs on it. Mint or Cinnamon cooperated quite nicely.

But I am not going to let poor Facebook performance determine
    my computer future. ;)

I think that, unless you use some OS specific application, upgrading that machine to Linux is a no-brainer.

Not because of Facebook specifically. A lot of not-so-modern web applications will give you trouble with old browsers and operating systems.

Not to mention it is reckless to use an old unsuported OS in an Internet facing machine.

Given the upgrade cost is zero, you could make yourself a gift and use something more recent.
